I've pulled my Lionel set out of long term storage and set it up. My original 1950's 8606 engine lost a rivet on one of the wheel shafts (see pix). It appears that the next highest unit is not available. Any suggestions on work arounds? I first thought about simply removing it, but the bushing that is part of it is necessary to hold other parts of the drive shafts on the engine. Help!

Your engine is more around 1987. It is missing the valve gear rivet, readily available from any Lionel parts source.
The 8606 is not from the 1950's but the 1980's.
It is easier and cost effective to replace the whole Valve Gear, part number 8606-64:
This is available from the usual suspects:

The actual rivet is 700E-54 and available about anywhere:
thx! Ordered the higher assembly and look forward to the repair.
I was incorrect about the number - mine is 8608. No other markings on the engine. Can't recall the year (long time ago), but it was the original engine I received as a gift from railroading grandfather - probably late 1950's.
