I have had a 1988 version of the Lionel 350E Hiawatha passenger set, but lately have been buying DCS equipped engines. Chris had a red, white & blue PS-2 Hiawatha for sale so I bought it and went about swapping the innards. The tender was simple, I just repainted the PS-2 tender outer frame maroon. Taped off the trucks and electronics. For the loco, there were a couple of small bits needing to be cut off, but the biggest challenges were cutting out the connector opening for the harness without doing much damage to the paint or making it too big. The real hard part was a mounting post on the Lionel shell that went from the hood of the shell all the way down the side. It had to go for the fan and smoke unit. Took a lot of cutting and a couple of discs. The casting was really hard. Being as these cars say they need 72" curves, I was very pleased to see them run nicely on my 57" 5 rail track on the portable layout.
