Hi all a co-worker bought her husband this Lionchief set and he thought it was silly and offered to be at a bargain price. I might buyt it if it is as good of a runner as the other LC stuff I have used. It sure is pretty but what is the general opinion of these General style locos? I am primarily a diesel guy so I don't have any experience, in this segment. Wishing everyone a healthy and happy weekend...

It's a sore subject with me.  I bought that set and sold it without opening it because I hate the General-style engines so much.  I preordered it on impulse so I was committed to buy it.  I usually buy all things Anheuser-Busch.

But I am just not a fan of that General-style engine AT ALL.  So I sold it immediately to get most of my money back.

I still want that Clydesdale car so I'll end up buying that from a set-break on ebay or a train show.  And I'm going to buy the cars and barrel loader from the new catalog.

Hi Frank,  here are two threads on the  Generals.  The first is specific to the Budweiser set. The engine is a good puller, similar to the Five Star General, which is discussed in the second thread. I thought the packaging was much better in the Bud set, so it would be very easy to store the set when not in use.

They are both Bluetooth.  They seem to respond better to an Iphone than android.  For the price I paid, I though they were good values.

Hope this helps,

Dave

If you're interested, MTH made two very nice Anheuser-Busch engines over the years.  Both are PS2.

Adolphus III 2-8-0 RailKing steamer from set 30-4155-1 - This engine is very cool because it plays "Here Comes The King" Budweiser song.

The other engine is a RailKing diesel Budweiser GP-9 30-2920-1 - this one behaves like any MTH diesel.  But still cool.  There is a non-powered version too 30-2920-3

Beachhead2, I haven't seen any pieces of that set show up on ebay. good luck finding the Cldesdale car.

I've got a pretty good collection of Bud trains going. With the prices of "new" stuff I haven't been paying a lot of attention to catalogs lately so I missed this set.  I just read Dave's and  would like to get one down the road.

Based on the earlier review of this set, I ordered one and the extra Clydesdale car.  It is a blast.  The set runs perfectly and this is the first Bluetooth set that I have that has sounds loud enough to be heard over the sounds of the train.  From Christmas till we took the Christmas layout down, it ran every day.  It is at our mall display right now and I will be running it again next weekend for our open day for the public.  And the number of dialog sounds must be double any of my earlier Bluetooth sets.  Be sure to listen to them at the online catalog.

The Lionchief General sets run fine just as any other Lionchief set.  It is just they look a little more toy like because the drive wheels are solid (No holes between spokes) and cow catcher is solid, etc.

But if you are a Bud fan than I would get it , why not.

I plan to get the Promontory Summit Set, depending on what the Brass Jupiter and 119 turn out to be like in May.

Even though they may be more toy like, it still will be a cool set since nothing else is currently available.
