I recently acquired a Lionel No. 248 Box Cab Electric Loco and I was surprised to see tan interesting reverse unit. It is different than the later "e-unit" but I also think it is different than the "pendulum" reverse units.
I have 2 other No. 248 locos, and neither is equipped with a reverse unit..,forward only operation.
Any information on this reverse unit would be appreciated. I've attached images and a video.

The 248 was never made with a reverse unit, and I don't know of Lionel making a reverse unit that looks like the one in your engine. My guess is that a previous owner custom-built it and installed it.
Thats a modified OO Eunit. Also used in the B6 Switchers.
Thanks @Rob English. It certainly looks factory produced. It just barely fits under the body and it works very well on the bench after I cleaned the contacts. I'm interested to see how it works on the track, which will be after I get new wheels for the 248.

Yes, it had several broken teeth. I'll get it when I order the wheels. I suspect that someone tried to run it with swollen wheels and the gear failed.
