I've purchased one of these later crossing gates in a layout dis-assembly sale. I cannot find any dependable parts exploded view outside of one on Lionel's site which doesn't show me much. The gate arm will not rise up when power is off. The arm moves very freely, but it doesn't even try to go up. Was there a spring assist built into this model?

Just guessing here, but I'd bet that the gate was left on too long and the coil melted. The rod that rises to lower the gate is probably stuck in a melted shaft.

The counterweight at the end of the gate is what brings the arm back up. There is no spring return, just gravity. If the arm does not return, the coil may of overheated like stated above. Even if the arm moves freely, if there is any drag on the arms' plunger in the coil, it may be enough to keep gravity from doing it's job. The coil is part #252-52 and is available from Brasseur.

Thanks guys, coil is perfect, no damage, no rubbing. Seems the counter weights are a little smaller than the 252 weights. Will probably fashion something that I can attach to the inside of the existing weights that looks good to help with the raising part.

I have seen 262 where the red lights and Lucite rod were added. This adds enough weight that the arm will not come up. On other crossing gates I have glued a nail on the bar between the weights to get the arm to come up.
