These look like a nice accessory, any ideas on why so expensive? Are they that scarce?

You didn't mention what price you saw. They were around $260 when first produced in the PWCS.

Seems a common price is near or over $200 including the car I think. Good to hear it is a solid item. I'll be patient. Never been to York but this may be the year. Any guess how prices might be there compared to the unidentified auction site?
Sometimes Ebay makes less common items seem to be readily available. In my experience the original postwar 264 forklift truck loader is not too common (at least in my area). When they are found, they are often incomplete, not working, and/or rusty.
I would not call it rare.
There's one on ebay today for $500. Why are they so high?

In my opinion, York prices for postwar are about as high as prices can get. The hot deals at York seem to be on the new stuff that is a few seasons old. So, you can probably get a reissue for less than an original.
Are you talking about the postwar or modern reissue?
The postwar ones are sometimes a little high. Your paying for condition they were made in 1957-58 only I beleive.
The postwar ones go for anywhere between 150 to 250, that I have seen. They may go for more with the box. Everything is condition. The new versions use a can motor. They are reliable as well. I have seen some go for, with a buy it now price, for 150 sealed. I have 2 of the postwar versions near mint that I picked up for under 200.00. Just need to shop around.
