I saw the 3rd Rail's model of CB&Q 4960. A very nice engine. Does anyone out there own one? How do you like it? Is it a good running engine? Sound?? How is this Companies products doing operationally??
Thanks,
Jeff

I have one. It's a beautiful model. I've only test run mine (I have no layout, I bought it as a trophy locomotive) but it ran very smoothly and sounded great.
However, I understand there were only 100 of the Burlington Mikado's (2 and 3 rail combined) imported so finding one will be a challenge.

I have the other version of the CB&Q O1a 2-8-2, i.e the Elesco Feedwater Heater with straight sided coal bunker tender sides. The 4960 version has the Worthington type BL Feedwater Heater system. It is fantastically prototypically accurate, and runs great, Very smooth and nice slow speeds too.
Thanks for the replies. I sure would like one, but not sure I can let go of $1400+ Are 3rd Rail engines good engines??

Of course they are "good engines"! I own about 20 Sunset/3rd Rail models, virtually all steam, and run the he&& out of them. In my opinion, they have the absolutely best drive system, i.e. smooth and quiet, plus EXCELLENT customer support.
Thanks that is what I wanted to know!!

Not sure if its apples and oranges, but .... my Legacy Y6b ran much more smoothly than my 3rd Rail Y6b. I kept the Lionel for that reason.
Whichever model you buy, have fun running your new toy.
3rd Rail Y6b circa 2005, has the EOB Cruise system, not as smooth as the current ERR Cruise we put in our models in the last 10 years. Apples and Oranges comparison.

Rusty,
You are more than welcome to bring your model over to our house and run it on our 3RS layout. My 3-Rail model of #4978 has already been up-grade to Kadee couplers, but we do have a transition car so that those models still equipped with the "claw couplers" are able to be coupled to any of our trains.
