I recently picked up at auction an EMD E-7 diesel A unit. I thought it was new in the box, and appears to be, but no instructions. Was this A unit supposed to be a set with another A unit?? If so, can this A unit be run by itself?? What do I have to do. The unit I bought was in a box by itself. Anyone with information would be appreciated. This engine looks to be an awful nice model! Thanks.

It is likely powered unit capable of running alone as very few dummies (if any) were produced by 3rd Rail. You can go to their website and check the model number to see when it was produced. Most later models have Lionel's TMCC in them and operate beautifully!
Try it out.
OK, that sounds encouraging. I'll try and navigate their website. The label does mention December 2011. And I thought they were TMCC, and I'll look underneath for a "Program/Run" switch for TMCC
On some of the newer 3rd Rail diesels, the switches are located under a removable magnetic hatch on the roof. But I'm not sure about yours.

Apparently mine are too old. I don't seem to see any removable hatch, and I did not a program switch underneath, so I am all set. Actually I did get the engine to fire up and operate as one unit, and will re-program it later with a new number. I am assuming these engines do not smoke. The holes on top are quite tiny, but they seem to have a metal casing inserted in the holes. No problem if it does not smoke, I have enough smoke, but I'd like to know. I am awaiting a reply via phone and I will ask, plus ask about instruction manual. Thanks.
Are photos of the loco and its box out of the question?
