I have an older 3rd Rail, late nineties vintage Pennsylvania J1 2-10 4.It has a QSI sound and control system with a 8.4 volt rechargable battery. All functions seem to operate normally. Could I replace the green 8.4 battery with a BCR ? I am not sure 3rd Rail used the same system as the MTH ps1 system.

That is a "conventional only" model, isn't it?
I am not sure what you mean by conventional only concerning 3rd rail engines. This J1 has operating bell, whistle, and steam sounds and 6465 cab number.

By "conventional only", I mean that the model does NOT have any sort of command control, i.e. no TMCC or no DCS command control. In order for you to operate the model, you vary the voltage to the track with your transformer.
Yes, you may use a BCR. Hopefully, your QSI/Protosound System (they are the same) has not succumbed to de-programming (the "clanks of death") due to lack of use
