3rd Rail Pullman Solarium car? Is that the latest announcement? Anyone interested in one?

Prospective buyers for new Golden Gate Depot passenger cars that care  about prototype accuracy should let Scott know that re-using the roof tooling from his 12-1 heavyweight Pullman on other Pullman heavyweight variants will visibly compromise the accuracy of the model - and effect their buying decisions.  One of the interesting things about heavyweight Pullmans is the variety of window configurations and AC duct location on the roofs.  It's a form follows function thing - the AC roof ducts change in length and location relative to the room/aisle arrangement in the car below.  Some modelers might not care - but a growing percentage of today's 3RS and 2 rail modelers do want the major details (especially the roof profile, window pattern, and walls) to sync with one another.  

How about a Burlington DL-3 Scott?

Not sure if this qualifies as a solarium of sorts but it's built in the same methodology as a heavyweight albeit in Alcoa aluminum..

Yes we need a solarium car. so here is my take on the matter, The 2 window version has been done by PSC. So The better choice for new is the 3 window as painted in the circus colors. This has never been done in O scale. If Scott would do it I would take 3.

We already have the PRR solarium however I understand if Scott wants to build for PRR guys as they out number everyone else.

the PRR style was done by Walthers when? The brass PSC is incorrect with windows on both vestibules. I am unaware of this on solariums. If I'm incorrect please school me .

I just reread the PRRT&HS Keystone magazine Vol. 49 No.3 that has the PRR Solarium article inside. All the pictures of the Solarium cars in the article were of the Three window design as they were Pullmans then leased to the PRR and painted in PRR Colors.

As stated Above, if there is a darth of Pullman Three window Solarium, It would be very wise for Scott to do a run of both the three and Two window solarium cars. I am sure PRR fans would by both models. I know I would.

And the " Andrew W. Mellon has several Styles of Paint including PRR FOM colors along with a "Buy Extra War Bonds" billboard underneath the windows! What's NOT to LOVE!

an Omaha Club and a Minneapolis would be lovely...

I agree with you. Either one of these would be great to see in O Gauge. Do you have any of the Burlington passenger car books done by Bill Glick? He did 5 books, one is a large diagram book that is detailed with most all classes of Burlington cars. The other books contain tons of photos of various classes of passenger cars. 

Bill's focus is with wood and heavy weight cars, his favorite is the Blackhawk. These are quality books that should be in every Burlington fan library. Bill is an avid HO modeler and must have over 100 HO passenger cars.

I have been gone for 3 months pouring  the bases for the largest grain silos I have ever done, in Alliance Ne.

 Solariums are sweet and I have built a few. I have 3 currently.  The ones in my previous post are a walthers  Washington Club as in Keystone Vol22,No 2.      I believe this car is preserved in a museum somewhere southeast, Atlanta?

The brass one, I posted photos above, I thought was a Mainstreeter from NP but windows are incorrect. Santiago, this car is for sale, and seeing your work I would sell it for a song to you. contact info in profile.

 the photos I post today are of a 3 window version. I believe it to be a Crestline model from ? pre Walthers any body got info?

One of the nicest solarium heavyweight cars in O scale is American Standard Car Co.'s kit 3989 - an 8 section, buffet, sun room lounge.   In 1948 the PRR purchased 10 plan 3989 cars from Pullman, retiring them in 1957/8.  They  had 2 tall windows on each side in the sunroom/lounge, and were ice air conditioned in the 1930's.   A distinctive feature of the 3989 prototype is a wide deck clerestory roof, which when air conditioned used angular (vs. rounded) roof ducts.  I have an undated  4  page ASC flier listing the new 3989 kit and it has two photos of plan 3989 solarium's  (Lawyer's Club, Bankers Club)  nicely finished in the postwar 3 stripe PRR scheme.    Unfortunately I didn't purchase a 3989 kit before ASC went out of business.    In 1995 a successor company to ASC, the Pullman Scale car MFG. Co., Knoxville, TN, put out a 30 page catalog which included the plan 3989 kit and virtually the entire ASC product line.  Unfortunately attempts to order from the catalog were unsuccessful.  Eighteen years later to my surprise I found a built up non-air  ASC 3989 solarium on a March  Chicago Meet table and snapped it up.  The rub was that I model the PRR in the early 1950's , and the nicely built model was detailed for the 1930's.   For service on my railroad the model needed to be rebuilt with AC roof ducts and  under body details - and I couldn't find  a source for the special angular roof duct material.  Fortunately custom car builder Dan Pantera (Calumet Shops) was at the same meet and told me he had some wide clerestory AC duct strips on hand and would take on the re-detailing project.  The car is now on on his list of back ordered projects  - - patience Ed...

Any ideas about which trains carried these cars in the Fifties?

Western Pacific 651 series would be an interesting car with short platform.  And Scott, WP 653 is only about 30 miles from your shop.  Easy to get to to check details.   BTW, the name Feather River is bogus, never had a name as far as I have been able to learn

My thoughts are...

It would seem like an obvious move to announce something to go with one of the many runs of Diesels which are in the works (E6's, F3's, E7's, PA's). 

That being said I think the following could be strong candidates...

1941 City of Los Angles 

1942 Panama Limited

1941 400

1948 North Coast Limited (although I'd prefer a 1952 NCL) 

Late 40's Chief

Late 40's Golden State

...

NOW my all time hope would be for a 1942 Colorado Eagle!!! But I very much doubt that will happen

I already ask last May at O scale west 2017 in Santa Clara. I ask about the Colorado Eagle, and was told not likely. The magic number is 20 sets. They have a hard of enough time getting those figures for the diesels. I sent Scott and Jonathan about 2lbs of data for the Mopac PA's, if the builder gets it right it will be stunning , same for the Porthole Mopac E6's

Reason I make this comment is the recent Mopac E8 models were very short coming, for correct data supplied or had.

Now would be the best chance to do the Colorado Eagle with the PA's, E6's, and E7's. The many engine offerings may bring in some extra orders because a complete CE could be ordred at once.  Certainly that same logic helped increase Empire Builder orders. Count me in for one!!!
