I am working on a scale Hudson smoke unit where the heating element sets vertical in a good sized chamber the owner had drowned it with smoke oil so i cleaned it up and pot a few drops back on it and it worked great until it used that up I have put more in it but afraid to drown it again. my question is does this thing require a wick of some kind or batting in the chamber so the resistor can work? the loco looks gorgus thanks Warren

ps I forgot to say that is a Lionel
You have the puffer type unit. It’s got a sleeve over the resister that absorbs the fluid. That’s all. It won’t handle 20-30 drops like the newer fan driven type. Before I converted mine to fan driven I think I did put wicking on the bottom just enough to hit the resistor cover which allowed for more fluid.

thanks the resistor is bare no sleeve what can I do?
If you have no sleeve then you’ll definitely need wicking material. Just remember that the resistor cannot be fully emerged into the material. You also may just put a Lionel sleeve back over it and be done.
