Hello everyone,

I wanted to install 4 chuffs on this engine, and couldn't decide what method to use. Being this engine has no trailing truck wheels too install magnets on,  and the cherry switch is very difficult to get too without gutting the insides to reach the cam under the cherry switch, I decided too use the front drive wheel, I was able to install 4 magnets on the inside surface of the drive wheel at 12, 3 , 6 and 9 . There was just about enough room between the drive wheel and the chassis, I just had to file the magnets down a bit to insure they wouldn't hit the chassis. Then I simply installed a reed switch on the underside of the chassis and netted 4 chuffs per revolution. Also  While I had the shell off I upgraded the smoke unit.  The 4 chuffs are right on the money.

Thanks for looking,

Alex

Nice job as usual Alex.  While the romance of the big articulated's and large steam in general is unmistakable, there is something just awesome about the smaller steam I can't get past.  This one really takes the cake for sure!  So much fun watching smaller steam in action, reminds me of being a child again.

Hi guys, I thank you all for the great comments, and input !!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Ben (Norton) lol, if I want a motor boat with three propellers I'll get one.

I love the feeling of working on an engine, and seeing the results when it's put back together and running on the track. Reminds me of many years ago, when I use too work on my 1968 Dodge charger. I would think nothing of ripping the engine out and making it even more of a powerhouse then it was. I hope too see you soon, haven't seen you for a while now.

Steve, I'll gladly work on your ten wheeler for you, anytime.

Rod, I totally agree with you, this is a very hard engine too take apart. A ton of electronics in a very tight space. The way I added the 4 chuffs is pretty easy, I just clipped the cherry switch wires and ran them too the reed switch. With great care, very easy too damage something while doing this. Tight tight quarters. lol

Jim, if Lionel released this engine in Legacy, it would be a home run for them

Thanks again to all of you,

Alex

Very cool Alex! You certainly do quality work, and the results speak for themself!

I have looked at several with that in mind, and I've never had enough clearance to make it happen.  I have thought of milling small depressions in the driver to recess the magnets enough for clearance.

I have a bunch of the little magnets of various thicknesses, perhaps I could find some really thin ones that would make this easier without resorting to extreme measures.

Your success has prompted me to look at this again.

Yesterday my friend Kevin and I visited Alex to have some repairs and upgrades done to one of Kevin's and three of mine Lionel Legacy and TMCC engines including a Mogul. We were at Alex's house from 9:30 to about 3:00pm. Besides getting a great upgrade and repairs we enjoyed a great pizza lunch with Alex and his lovely wife Dina. It was a great day, besides the repairs we had great conversations about the forum, trains and other interesting stuff. Also a tour of his layout.

If any of you need upgrades on TMCC engines Alex is your go to guy. Lucky for me it's only a hour and twenty minute drive to get to Alex's house.

Thanks again Alex for doing great work and being a true friend
