All 4 wires are connected to track activation piece.  I have a clip on the track to apply power.  When I run my dump car over the activation track, it starts dumping and keeps dumping without me even using the controller.   Any ideas? Do I need all 4 wires connected to track piece?

Everything else seems to work correctly.   It’s just the magnet has constant power.   Confession before I tested the dump activation, one of the wires was disconnected.   I assumed I had knocked it loose.  It was the 3rd screw from left.  Any ideas appreciated.  Thanks, Jeff

First off, you do not have a 497 - you have a 497 remake such as the 2315 or the 6-14107.

Here is the user manual: https://www.lionelsupport.com/...5956714107250002.pdf

Here is the pictoral diagram: https://www.lionelsupport.com/...s/102315Complete.pdf - Note the jumper wire

Here is a Service Document Addendum addressing wiring concerns: https://www.lionelsupport.com/...rrewiringdiagram.pdf

All from an appropriate search of Lionel's support site: https://www.lionelsupport.com/...&product=6-14107

imageI admit I’m illiterate to how this stuff works and I’m not an electronic person.   I looked at the diagram and it didn’t answer my question or didn’t make sense enough to answer it. Yes this is a reissue but says 497 on it nonetheless.   The wires I think are in question are the ones that come from above to connect to track.  I’m assuming the grey wires from controller to motor are ok

I disconnected one at a time.  The 2 on left don’t seem to do anything.   I disconnected the next wire over and the bin and dump stopped working.   The last wire, far right is what turns the magnet on.   I disconnected that one and the car stopped activating.  However, the controller wouldn’t trigger it either.

I’m wanting to confirm that I need all 4 wires connected.  If the wiring is correct, can it be the controller?  I guess there’s things that can break there to.  If I have to, I can put a switch in there.  Before I go to wild, I was hoping the wiring was ok
