Question, I have a standard gauge 'piper' 442 with 3 18" cars, not sure what set this was, but does anyone know if AF included a diner car at some time? A friend a long time ago asked me where the 'other' car was, as he seemed to think the set had 4 cars. Is he thinking maybe of the 'President' set? Thanks.

In 1931 the new "PIPER" locomotive was introduced

and the set came with 4 cars and a "piper" steam locomotive/tender (4695loco-4693tender-forming the 4696 loco & tender combination).

The set was called "Minute man".

In 1932 the name was changed to "New Minute Man" and consisted of a "piper" loco/tender and only 3 cars.

It stayed this way in 1933 and 1934 also.

In 1935 and onward  the set was not listed in the catalog.

So to answer your question, the diner was dropped from 1932 onwards.  However, that doesnt mean that Flyer didn't use dining car bodies and label them as pullman's instead.

The windows on the dining car are the wide rectangles, matching some of the windows on the observation.  The coach body has small square windows similar to your baggage car windows.

You might find a diner to match your train, but the colors of the cars varied from blue to turquoise to green, so matching the shade of paint will be somewhat a challange.

Also, some cars came with window shades and truss rods instead of air tanks on the bottom.

If you have any more questions, I'd be happy to help.

all of this info is from the Flyer catalogs of the period.

Also,

If you want to forward me a few photos of your set, I can probably help you date it as I have been aggressively studying Flyer standard gauge steam locos over the past 2 years and have become quite familiar with them.

Well, American Flyer did market the locomotive as being a "faithful reproduction of the "Crack" B&O President Washington locomotive."

Loose cars show up on ebay sometimes.  You just have to match color and construction details.
