Cab light is again flashing 3 times which I believe indicates a smoke fan issue. Entire smoke system shut down. Lionel factory repair was done previously but repair did not last long. The cylinder smoke really makes this engine.  Anyone have similar issues with the engine ? Suggestions to get a permanent fix ?. Too expensive to keep sending  to Lionel everytime this happens.

Thanks for input on this issue.

BILLYBOY,

You live in Pennsylvania, a big state but there are two forum members who do great work fixing Lionel engines and live either in or near to Pennsylvania:

                1. Alex M - lives in NJ

                2. Gunrunnerjohn - lives in PA.

Do a search for their forum posts, click on their name to go to their member data where you can find their email addresses.

By the way I do not think there will be a permanent fix for any smoke unit, no matter who makes them they need to be serviced sooner of latter.

if you feel comfortable fixing this yourself you need to disassemble the engine from the frame. then see if  smoke fan motor will run using a 9 volt battery using the motor leads to power from battery but first unplug motor from the pcb.  if it runs motor is good it might possibly be the regulator is bad. I'm not electronics minded so hopefully one of the online techs can further help you on the regulator part of diagnostics.

first off most times if motor is bad they advise to get a smoke motor from mth they seem to be more dependable.

I like the S-3 even more since I re engineered the cylinder smoke hose and made a brass connector so tubing couldn't dislodge from frame connection hole it smokes up a storm and has for 3 years now I also tossed the aquarium hose for an automotive hose.

good luck
