I have seen a couple of posts referring to this topic. Can anyone elaborate on the process for me so I can see if this is something I want to attempt? Thank you very much!

I don't know how hard it is, but I just sent mine to Frank Timko so he could install a fan driven smoke unit. I guess I'll install the motor, which I believe is a one or two screw install. Hoping to have it back before the Christmas tree is in the house.
From the pictures I have seen its a bolt on deal. Frank machines an adapter for the can motor and mounts a gear that matches the one on the Pullmore.

I know this doesn't answer your question but, unless I've got to replace a defective component I'd leave it just the way it is. Granted, the 18056 is primitive by today's standards but for an AC motor it's low geared, pretty smooth, great sound, and really does well without cruise control. I certainly appreciate the efforts made by Lionel back then to make this engine the total package of it's day with a nod to the older 700's. My 18056 is a pleasure to operate. By the way, thank you to a forum member who provided the correct reset code (740) that was needed a few months ago. RICH
The motor from Timko is indeed a bolt in job, and the loco will run very smoothly after that.
The rub, if there is one, is that you have to change the E-unit. If it's an electro-mechanical unit, you can rewire it with a bridge rectifier.
If the current E-unit is a circuit board, it has to be replaced.
Neither is a show stopper or difficult/expensive to do, but you have to include the E-unit in your plans.
How hard is it to change the drivers on these older Hudsons?
Royboy, how did you find the pulling power to be with Frank's motor?
Not trying to hijack the thread, but Will Frank just sell you the motor and bolt on parts? I would rather do the work myself. Still contemplating on doing my commodore vanderbilt. But I think I would also have to re do the electronics so they all respond to TMCC. I dont know how to do that.
I think he will sell just the motor.
You will have to change out the AC E Unit to anything designed for DC including the DC Commander, Cruise Commander, Cruise Lite, MTH PS2, or an E Unit made by Lionel or Williams if you only run conventional.

P.S. Thanks to all the Vets out there for their service today! I am third generation Air Force and I appreciate what they have done for our country and those that continue to protect us everyday! Thank you!

I thought the motor looked too small, but the gear ratio is so high numerically, that the loco has much better performance at al speed ranges and gobs of pulling power. I put a fan on the motor in case it got hot, but that really was not needed.
To answer another question, the bracket that Timko makes is an original Lionel bracket that is cut down. Frank supplied this and returned my old pullmore motor intact.
