I returned from my trip via Amtrak from WSS WV to LA, CA recently. Below is a link to my trip 'log', I don't like blog. My 2011 trip is also there. Lots of Amtrak details and lots of California travel talk. The logs are pretty long.....and I was surprised at how many read the 2011 log, but here they are.....
Cliff notes version.....Amtrak is far from perfect...but still the only way to travel when you can.

I agree. It's not like the old days, but pretty enjoyable. 
The AMTRAK folks do the best they can with what they have, IMHO.

I'll have to read your latest. We rode cross-country in figure-eight route, DC - Chicago - LA - Seattle - Chicago and back to DC, way back in 1999. A couple shorter trips too since then and we really to get back on the rails.
Well I read the whole thing, I enjoyed it, you must be a good writer. Seems like I always take my long train trip in the winter. Last year was 6000 miles also, but included the VIA Rail Canadian. You really should do that once in your Life. More like a national treasure than a train. Maybe I could put my notes and pictures together.

I've taken a few rail trips (not including tourist trains); Ghan and Indian Pacific in Australia, fast train from Paris to Brussels, a local train from Munich to Salzburg. Amtrak trips have been from Denver to Chicago (several times) and once from Chicago to DC.
