VMT in Roanoke,VA. has announced N&W 4-8-4 #611 will go to Spencer, N.C on October 9, 2017. It will remain there for some time as it undergoes shop work and its annual inspection.

More VMT news, on 3 roundtrips of the new Roanoke Amtrak trains, VMT will run a private domecar with all amenities. This will be in November, and all proceeds go towards 611.

It is my understanding that these are "ONE WAY" trips!

I read it as one way as well. Amtrak only offers one round trip a day (north in the AM, south in the PM). They'll have to drop the car in DC, as the northbound train continues to Boston... another train would pick up the car that afternoon. Since I cant imagine starting at WAS and going southbound (you'll get there in time for bed, and an early wakeup call the next morning to go back), this really only makes sense as a day trip to DC with a few hours to wander around the National Mall. Take the excursion car Northbound, Southbound you'll be wasting your money in the dark.
