Hello guys and gals.....

I been looking for someone to make 3 simple 2 wire (red for roller-pick ups and black for ground) hook up electronic diesel horn that's really loud  as I want to put it in my Williams F-3 ABA  that the horn would blow when using a horn button of my Z4000.   Can someone like Gunrunnerjohn, GGG or others can make that ( PC board with speaker).   I gave up looking for the simple electronic diesel horn as no one makes it !!   Everybody wants mult-noises sounds system which is useless to me but a simple loud electronic horn (just a horn nothing else) that I can hear. I can take pictures of the installations of the horn in the Williams F-3's so others can see.

Tiffany what happen to the horn and speaker you bought off of me. why can't you use it.

 Hello chessie1971.

I remember the one you sold to me but I installed it in the lionel LTI F-3 ABA set and sold the lionels and purchased the Williams F-3's that time I was too lazy to take it out and reuse it in the Williams that is my fault and I regret it.  I was very sorry for not taking it out that day before I sold the lionel F-3's knowing now that they are not easy to find.

Hello guys and gals......

I just deleted the post about the Williams F-3's compared to the Lionel LTI F-3's a min ago.  But I am still looking for someone to make the 2 wire hook up simple electronic horn...... What I said is true about the Williams and lionel LTI f-3's anyway back to the horn problem.........

This may be what you are looking for, but it may be beyond those who don't want to make circuits up. If you wanted, you could omit the link between pin 1 of both jumper connectors and power H (Pin 1 on JP2) to a separate regulated and rectified power source. From there, your sounding device options are endless from simple buzzers to postwar units etc...

Hello bmoran4.......

If I had the skills to make the PC then I could do it but I don't.  How small can PC board be using this drawing ?   Is it possible to make it in size of 1 inch wide and 1 1/2 inch long ?   Is this drawing for simple 2 wire hook up(red wire for roller pick ups and black wire for the ground like the frame) and 2 wires to the speaker to be controlled by push button on Z4000 to sound the horn ?   Really don't need the switch for this ?

Tiffany

Tiffany, the best way to think of it (with removing the link between pin 1 of the jumpers), is that it is a "receiver" switch for the horn button. Center rail connects to pin 1 of Jumper 1, ground to pin 2 to of jumper 1. When the horn button is pressed, the pins of Jumper 2 are connected not unlike a SPST (single pole single throw) switch. What the switch articulates is up to you (and any power supply requirements). You cannot simply connect a speaker to this circuit, but you could hook up a buzzer similar to the one here:

Since you are building the circuit your self, you can control the footprint of it and cut the base board accordingly to fit your application.

However, with the time and cost investment, you may be better off just getting an ERR board of sorts and enjoy (or ignore) the additional features it brings.

Hello bmoran4

Its hard for me to "listen" to mult-noises going on the same time it throws me off and cannot pick up sounds but single noise or sound such as a door bell, I can hear it strange huh ?  What about those horn systems in the early MPC FM engine that come with a electronic horn ?   I don't know why they are hard to find  but would be of useful for me and wanted to put 3 of them (one in each unit F-3 ABA set)

Tiffany,

You certainly don't need to spend $70 (or more) for a basic diesel horn for your Williams F3 set. Everyone likes to recommend Dallee or the latest ERR products, because most people here are die-hard scale enthusiasts. They either can't remember the simpler days, or just can't process the idea of anything less sophisticated.

Complicated circuits aren't what you asked for either. Some posters love to show off circuits. But it doesn't help you one bit.

MRC's AC Sounder is cheap, but you can't hear it. Apparently MRC forgot this card was supposed to be for O gauge trains.

Now, lets get back to basics. Try Lionel's parts website. Search for item No. 38312 which is a conventional classics F3. Look at part 691ISND101  "HORN / BELL BOARD / CONV. CLASSIC F-3". It's only $35. This is a basic horn and bell board for an F3. Hook two wires to your power. Hook two wires to your speaker. Connect a volume control if you want, but if you don't, it'll sound at full volume which you said you like anyway. If you wait until November 4th, Lionel's parts open house weekend, you can purchase this card for half price. That's  $17.50 for a nice horn and bell card, plus shipping.

I think that is one awesome inexpensive solution (when on sale!)

Hello GregR

THANK YOU SO MUCH, for helping me out with this as this is what looking for and didn't know lionel still makes those simple horn / bell board.  Will this work on the Williams F-3's with the DC can motors ?    I like the horn to be LOUD so no vol. control in this case (LAUGHING).  The correct p/n is 691SND101 ?    I would be wise to wait until Nov 4th, 17.50 plus shipping is sure a GOOD deal as I would like to put 3 of them in (ABA set).   Which speaker shall I use for this as will need 3 of them too !!  I am not sure which speakers to use but wanted to use the right one for the loudest sound possible.  I was born DEAF so that's why !! So the louder the better !!!!   Total is 52.50 for 3 plus shipping wow !!!!!!   I sure MISS the simpler days when trains were simple and easy to work on !!!!  The Williams F-3's are simple enough as it is and like to keep it that way

hello Helichuck

Yes there is one in my Williams F-3's (came with it) but sounds funny like a crossing gate sounds and its not loud enough as I had to put my ears very close to the roof of the engine to be able to "hear" that weak sounds coming out of the wire screen vents near the front. That's no fun at all !!!!!!!  I turned the pot vol. all the way up then sounds were cut off and had to turn back down to just above half way and sounds came back pretty useless to me.   I purchased the Williams f-3's to get the Santa Fe "Blue" bonnet colors and simple inside.
