anybody have any advice on these switches. i've found a couple pairs of them and have been going over them since i am finally going to be building a layout. seems the main problem i am having is they wont lock when thrown. i have been over them cleaned, lubed everything, although i am using a repair guide for 022 switches i cant find anything on 711 but they are simular. is there some type of adjustment on the rat trap looking thing that locks them?

Mechanically, they are the same as the 022. You might check / compare the spring on the "rat trap" to the tension of a 022, also check the wear in the slot where that "rat trap" comes to rest at both ends of the travel. The major difference that I see is the housing for the mechanism: the 072's are diecast metal, the 031's are bakelite. Other than that, they're the same and a LOT more dependable than the junk remakes Lionel produced a few years back. Pretty good for something last made in 1941.
