You guys with all that hope in your hearts are just wasting your time.  Long before Lionel released their first ten wheeler I did much of the grunt work by doing the research on ten wheelers and sending articles, drawings, pictures etc to Lionel.  Then one day at a TCA convention in Chattanooga I happened to meet mr. Maddox, president of Lionel.  After I introduced myself Mr Maddox said, "Ottosen, huh?  You're the one who sent us all that info on ten wheelers, aren't you?".  I said I was.  "Wait 'til you see our next catalog. You might get a pleasant surprise this fall."  And I did when I saw that ten wheeler in the catalog.  The moral of my story is that if you have a specific want from a manufacturer send them as much info as you can so they will have something to work with.

When it comes to if people will buy it. I think anything will sell just for the fact it comes in a orange box that has Lionel printed on the side.

Thats for sure. Especially when an item is delivered with a gross error/ defect, whatever ( the non legacy, legacy 0-8-0's and Lionmaster class A's come to mind) and folks say things like " I expected incorrectly".

Didn't Ryan K. say on a recent Notch 6 interview that everything in this catalog is going to be "new"? I suppose that might be relative to the kind of changes Breezinup mentions but I am not holding my breath.

A re-issued GE Evo (see picture above) would not be "new" but I've never understood why Lionel hasn't made this model, or the sound-equipped Ethanol tank cars, again given the prices they command in the aftermarket.

The prices have tanked on these items and if they where remade they be more or at the price there at right now .. ge evos are selling for 1200 to 1300 mint . I seen them as low as 900...

It was only a matter of time this would happen.  Perhaps now we'll see a couple of BNSF #6436 units hit the market at the same time.  Wouldn't that be a hoot!    Or better yet, maybe Lionel might issue some new road numbers.

1.  I'll defer to you guys on the price issue. I will say that at $900-$1300 the VL Evos are still well above the dealer/street price when they were issued - from memory less than $700 and frankly that is the last real bargain I've had on a Lionel high-end model. Some years later I paid $900 to get the CP version, which was painful but I don't regret it. These models are amongst the best model diesels Lionel has ever produced, IMHO.

2.  Thinking about this prompted me to wonder again about what will turn out to be "new" in the forthcoming catalog. The GE and CP VL Evo models as well as the later die-cast ES44AC models Lionel produced were (a) Railsounds 6 and (b) equipped with the original modular (TMCC-like) Legacy boards, not the more recent RCMC etc. So if they were to be re-issued, it would have to be with the newer boards. That would be "new" in a very important sense.

Realistically I don't think this can be expected to happen because of cost and the fact that MTH has done the charging lights feature to death on their numerous ES44AC models.

It does also make me wonder whether the VL feature set, including the eco-friendly smoke output and special sounds as well as the charging lights, could be ported to/incorporated in the new Legacy boards. I imagine so but whether Lionel would think it profitable is another matter.

I have looked inside my few late model Legacy sound-equipped cars including a StationSounds diner. That one has the later Legacy boards and the sound set is certainly "new" compared with the TMCC version. So "new" in this context could mean the later model Legacy boards even if not new body tooling. (If they can provide them for the sound-equipped diners there's no obvious reason why they could not do the same for the Ethanol tank cars.)

Anyway only a few days to go before we find out.

If Lionel has die cast ES44 Evo's in the upcoming catalog they will sell out if that is possible with BTO.  I think it's something most of us, including me, could not resist.  I missed getting one the first go around and I definitely won't miss getting one this time.  It's been a while.  Has anyone at Lionel ever made any comments about future production of these?

Nice story. It may say more about Richard Maddox, however, than it does about doing research for Lionel.

The MSRP on these was $875 or so.  So if you paid $900, consider yourself lucky since the price for both the GE and CP EVO's went well into nosebleed territory of 2X the original MSRP.

Given Lionel's current top brass, I doubt we'd ever see these die cast ES44's produced at that MSRP again.  Heck, the price point nowadays for a plain old Lionel ABS diesel with Legacy is $650 MSRP.

When was the last time Lionel did a mountain steamer?  Early 2000's.  don't know if the tooling was part of the lawsuit but it's time they brought that engine back in Rutland

When the trial verdict was thrown out on appeal, the injunction against the use of certain tooling and the sale of certain already-produced locomotives was thrown out with it. The settlement subsequently reached between Lionel and MTH did not prevent Lionel from using any tooling or selling any already-produced locomotives. Lionel sold the locomotives and continues to use the tooling.

Hopefully some better quality stuff....my enthusiasm for the new catalog (and that upcoming Legacy Mogul) has diminished a bit as I pack up another 2 warranty repairs to ship to North Carolina.........

Just my opinion, but it seems clear to me that the current Chinese factory is not producing the quality that the previous factory did. I hold my breath as I open stuff these days. Most recently, I sent back one SD40 with a broken coupler, got another, and it had a paint chip. With a GP9, I sent the first one back to the dealer for defects. Then the replacement one had issues, and I am just going to order parts and repair it as best I can, and then sell it. I ordered a third one, and it had a couple of defects as well, but replacing parts (at my expense) will put it in acceptable condition, so I'm keeping that one. So it goes these days.

I feel like I post this every time a new MTH or Lionel catalog comes out but some sort of medium priced road switcher diesel locomotive would be a good bet.  A BL20GH could be cool to do since it has never been done in Ogauge.  The other ones that I think would do well are the CF7 and some of the GE road switchers like B36-7 would be good bets too.

Well my LHS let me take a peak at the order sheet on Friday night, not gonna spill any secrets but hopefully the folks at Lionel don't mind me saying a few words since we are less than 36 hours out.

Defiantly more product than the 2017 Volume 1 but not as much as the 2016 V1 Signature (though 2016 V1 was a very heavy catalog).

We have the return of several much  sought after high end locomotives that I think folks will be happy to see return. There's a nice premium set too which I really am enjoying Lionel making the effort to continue offering premium sets.

We have always had plenty from MTH but Lionel was far and few between. At least now we are getting at least one set per catalog.

That's all folks and if this post needs to be deleted I certainly understand.

Michael,

I applaud your judgment.  This is EXACTLY the kind of "teaser" that should have come out of the LCCA convention after Lionel's reported 45-minute catalog preview presentation.  You mentioned a few things here without really divulging anything.  Bravo!!!  I wish a few more folks had your common sense rather than being struck dumb to play silly games.

And no... Your post definitely shouldn't be deleted.

David

P.S.  Now hurry up and send me an email with all the details!!!

Nothing wrong with what he posted.

But sometimes the drama is pretty funny.

Wonder if there will still be a Notch 6 Podcast to go with the catalog release?  @Notch 6  Not sure since Lionel is doing this event with Ryan.  I hope so as Derek always seems to squeeze a little more info out of the manufacturers.

Of course there will be a show @MartyE We'll drop ours right along side the live Facebook show. Ryan and I talk for over an hour about the new catalog. It's going to be a long show with a fair amount to digest. Looking forward to sharing with everyone.

Thanks,

Derek

As always that's awesome!  Look forward to hearing it.  I really appreciate the effort you put into the catalog shows with all the manufacturers.
