Happy Holidays!

I have been waiting all night to go to work, but the railroad is pretty much shut down. Still home this morning so finally decided to turn a MTH PS1 GP9 into a dummy unit. It worked perfectly before this surgery, now just rolls perfectly behind a powered unit.

One thing I needed was the dummy plate to attach the trucks to the frame instead of using the motors. Happened to have a dummy RS3 unit so took that plate to attach the tracks and it is a done deal. (Anyone know the MTH part number for that plate to attach non powered trucks?)

Question: I kept the PS1 electro couplers, is there some controller that can be installed to operate the couplers by DCS? (I may go back and use the plunger type couplers off the RS3).

Next up, I have another PS1 GP9, same road name, (Texas&Pacific) but different number. I am hoping to transplant  PS3 electronics into the GP9. (This from a SD24 that when bought used had problems, manly due to shorts that I was able to troubleshoot and fix).

So, what do you think, will the MTH can motors out of a newer PS3 unit fit the trucks of an old PS1 GP unit? If not will the PS3 boards drive the  a PS1 motors?

Also, would the old PS1 electro couplers be driven by the PS3 board or would they also have to be replaced  by the PS3 couplers?

What about the speaker?

Probably more questions later.

Again enjoy the day, I, unexpectedly am!

Unless the motors have the same worm gear, you can't swap them to the other trucks.  The PS/3 electronics won't have any trouble with the PS/1 motors, but you will have to properly mount the tach reader and strip on one of the motors.

The PS/1 electrocouplers are not compatible with PS2/3, you'll need to replace those, ditto for the speaker, PS/4 requires a 4 ohm speaker.

As far as attaching trucks for a dummy that used to be a powered unit, I just use the motor mounting plate from the old motor, works like a champ.

Duh, I never even looked at the bottom of the motor. There's the adapter plate!

Thanks for the info Gunnerrunner John. I though the couplers would not be the same, but I will check on the motor worm gears when I get to it. I think I saw where the PS3 had a special ground mentioned before in another  thread, I will look back to see what was mentioned.
