If you're a PE fan like me, the new PE items from the 2014 Lionel catalog are a motivating factor to build a layout that will compliment the trains and let them "stretch their legs." Artistic license has always been the key for me, such as not building an exact replica but building according to one's own taste and preferences. My future PE layout goes way beyond my current hi-rail layout that's under construction, and may not get underway for many years to come. Nevertheless, I can run any trains on the existing layout and continue to dream and plan for the PE/North Pole division, which is actually part of the fun for me.

I recently found a book titled "The Art of the Polar Express." It contains lots of color images from the creators of the movie, and is a good resource.

I also discovered a great video of an O-gauge layout. Its an excellent artistic impression of the PE story using Lionel trains and movie music:

If you have any other PE resources, list them here.

Good find! It is a book you should have in your collection. Many years ago, I found this book at a vendors table at a train show. Our Forum member and expert PE guy Keith also acquired this book and I think used the pictures as a basis for his conversion of the Observation Car. I also strongly recommend this book to any PE fan.

I am glad you brought this subject up now is it is very timely with the new PE releases from Lionel in their new catalogs.

I, too, have long wanted to build a Polar Express layout after being inspired by several great ones I've seen on Youtube.  But I have been intimidated by the climb up the mountain as well as figuring out a way to build the layout and mountain so that I could take it down after the holidays.  I really don't want a holiday layout up all year, especially one of the Polar Express.  It's such a special movie and theme to me that I would hate to wear it out by staring at it all year.  I really love the thrill of diving back into that world every holiday season.
