Here are examples of different methods on the same layout (a model built to illustrate an OGR article I did a few years ago).
Which method is easiest for you depends on what type benchwork you have in place already and how comfortable you are with carpentry.
In general, the cookie-cutter method (Photo 1) gives the smoothest transition into the grade, and risers attached to an open grid requires the least precision in cutting and allows for the easiest adjustments as you build.
