so Dave, are you saying that the crane is mounted on one 4-wheel pilot ruck?  I love "shorty" one-truck cars!

   Thanks much for the kind words and the questions, yes it does swivel, and the crane turns in a complete circle in fact.  I am not really sure which old engine the double trucks came off of, they are not Pilot type however, but they are the perfect size to mount the little American Flyer Crane on.   I want to add a coupler to the Caboose of my 2600 series rolling stock, to pull the Custom American Flyer Crane Car, as the last  car on the work train, emulating the Union Railroad work trains.  I might invest in an additional Red Caboose for just this purpose.

Now that is a very creative idea!!  I like it...

   Alan thanks much, although I had the same idea I could never find a set of engine trucks that would work correctly, where ever the previous owner got these old trucks from is still a mystery to me.  They look like part of the running trucks from an old Lionel steamer, however they have no identification numbers or letters.

the truck appears to be the dummy truck from a Lionel 622 Switcher or a 2023 type diesel from the late40s early 50s (and would have come with the electromagnetic coupler. A close up with better lighting of the truck would help confirm this.

Missed this one. I came across it in a "crane" search and all I can say is, you beat me to it! Looks great so the thread deserves this second life 

  I just got a lose cab for free. Thought it was a bridge top "house" at first, but then noticed it was different. A "better" mini-crane is next was my first thought after repairing my "new-2-me" "junk" erie/bucyruss crane today. "Better" than what?? Better than this..(see below)..Which actually tracks great, resting in between the tanks on the work caboose, or even hanging free. Balsa body, soup can roof, brass stack & frame, aluminum beam, coil coupler opposite the beam, aluminum bracket added ridged on bottom truck plate. And on that, a cut, drilled, & riveted, non-op plastic coupler for the beam side)

Anyhow my first search led me here. So.. Thanks for the engine trucks idea(I have the ones like you used on a pw SFe diesel switcher). If I stumble across an engine truck before I see a six wheel truck, I know its another "weighty" choice for my crane. (Powered maybe?!?!)

   Oh that DT&I Orange work trains is way cool, no doubt about it, glad we could help with the truck set up, the work trains would actually look incredible with 2 mini Crane Cars in the consist.
