I want to let you know about a new advertiser in the pages of O Gauge Railroading magazine. In the October/November issue, Run 266, which is just now hitting the mail, you will find a full page ad for Menards on Page 30.

Many years ago I had the pleasure of meeting John Menard. We met aboard Reading 4-8-4 No. 2100 when it was deadheading from Pittsburgh to Brewster, Ohio. Later I got a tour of his huge product distribution center in St. Paul, MN. He is an O gauge modeler and we are thrilled to welcome Menards into the OGR Family.

I too wish we had one locally. I think the nearest one is about 65-70 miles in the next town of size to the north of us. May have to drive up there one of these days and check it out. Maybe they will make it down here someday? Glad they are advertising with OGR! New issue just arrived today will have to look at the ad tonight.

Yup, I know Menards from my former Wisconsin roots.  Moved to Ohio about 28 years ago.  I certainly wish that Menards would open a store somewhere near me.  As i is I have Homeless Despot located about 1/2 mile away and Lowe's about 4 miles.  Our original hardware stores, both ACE and True Value, have both downsized and are heading toward closure.

It would be wonderful to have a "big box" store that actually give a **** about us "0" gauge guys.

It's better than Lowes? It's become a in family joke that within 24hrs of landing in the US I have to have a "Lowes Fix". This wouldn't have anything to do with the fact there's always a few jobs to do on the house...ah that's my excuse and I am sticking to it!

(The range of gear available knocks the socks off our UK DIY stores)

730 miles to the nearest Menards from my US address. Good to see a big box store getting involved though.

I Used Menards to supplement supplies while on the road, and have not had quality issues with Menards bulk items to speak of. Excellent service too. Glad they are finally getting closer to me. Need pot metal wood screws that won't drive a 1/2" without the heads snapping? Then be told you must not be driving them right by a manager. Try Low's. Need to be treated like an scammer, ignored, maybe you never want reach anyone who knows the internal working of the company they work for, or you want to try to use a companies gift cards bought online at an actual store? Home Despot is my favorite. Menards, as a big box, is the closest to what you expect a real hardware store to be like. Still not quite the old school style, with drawers to the ceiling, but a step in the right direction.

Remember real selections of hardened nuts & bolts? With sizes smaller than 1/4 inch?  We ruined ourselves buying from the big boxes, and let our small businesses, who are our neighbors, go out of business. Just to save a buck, or two. Maybe we deserve the choices we have. (Hobby shop? Where? How far? But, don't you live in the city?

I mail-ordered two Menard's O Gauge flat cars a couple Christmases ago, one had the illuminated billboard.  Was excited to get them, but the quality of the construction was far lower than the Lionel products Menards had commissioned in recent years.  The brackets that allowed the billboard to mount to the flat were simply hot glued & came undone, plus the couplers were sticky & rudimentary... like the ones K-Line first used when it started production.

Nonetheless, I look forward to further specialized Menards' Christmas O gauge offerings this year.  It is always nice when major retailers like Menards, & (in the bast) Boscov's, supported O because their ownership liked the product.

I buy a lot from Menards and agree that they're way better than Home Depot or Lowes. I ran crane erecting 4 new Menard stores here in the midwest a few years back and it is a pleasure to work for them as the jobsites are pretty decent.

As much as I really like the newer Menards facility near us, I instead shop at the local Home Depot.

Why?

Because Home Depot offers a 10% discount to veterans, upon showing your Veterans ID card. Upon questioning a Manager at our Menards store, he said that their prices were already low enough.

At any rate, I'm happy to see them advertising, and supporting, OGR Magazine.

Just returned from the Grand Opening of the store in Cincinnati, great store, nice quality wood at reasonable prices (although one might have to pick through it a little), 2 for $5.00 on spray paint, parts drawers for $5.99, overall very happy to ad them to my list of possible sources for materials.

Great to see a major new client in OGR.

Best,

Jason
