Captain John invited my girlfriend and I to his house yesterday. I brought my camera and took some pictures of this amazing layout. I live in Rhode Island and never knew such a layout was literally 15 minutes from my door.

John is a Ship Master on a ferry plying the waters of Long Island Sound from New London CT to Orient Pt NY. In addition he is a gracious host and as you will soon see a very accomplished layout builder.

I'll let the pictures speak (mostly) for themselves. Our visit has generated many ideas for the layout that is hopefully in my future. Thanks again John for a fun couple of hours and your wonderful hospitality.

I love how John has his trains on shelves surrounding the layout

John incorporates many local RI landmarks including Dels Lemonade and the Twin Willows Bar. John also has a sense of humor evidenced by locating a Dr's office next to a, well you'll see.

Can you spot the recently upgraded to PS2 Big Boy? (done by fellow forum member Marty F.)

There is even a subway that does it's rounds with programmed stops at the very nice elevated station. OK, I'll stop talking now and let you enjoy John's layout.

all the best,

Paul

Thank you for the kind words on the pictures. My expertise is not indoor photography. Although I am learning portrait photography through a group in Worcester.

I am getting better and next time will set up the tripod and extra lights for more detailed images.

One of the "features" of John's layout is that everything can be reached. He has cleverly designed the layout so that the south yard and north turntable area are cut into the layout with a walkway. Hard to see from the pictures but very practical in design.

The other highpoint was seeing how much my girlfriend was into the layout and overall train room. On the way home she said " I can't wait till you buy a house and we can have our own layout".

Yes my dear - I'm working on it....

Paul, it was great having you and MJ over Sunday afternoon. Thanks so much for taking the pictures and posting them on the Forum.

TrainsRme, Doug N, Don, Rick C. & Charlie - Thanks for your nice comments.

Alan, I'll post these pictures on the Mid America 3 Railers site.

Alex - Wish I had your expertise & knowledge on building structures.

Jon - Look for me the next time you take the ferry.

Dotty & Marty - Thank you. Your welcome anytime. We are onle 1 hour & 10 minutes away.

Passenger Train Collector - Bonnet Shores is 1 mile down the road. Please stop by if you are nearby.

Spence - The train room is 50' X 32" It is in my walkout basement. The layout is 32' X 22" and is 43" off the floor. This gives it a nice visual look when walking around the room. Plus, when working on the layout underneath I can sit on a mechanics creeper and roll along underneath freely. No more crawling on your hands and knees. Layout is framed with 2 X 4's & 4 X 4's for legs. The layout is 5/8" plywood covered with 1/2" homosote. It's all Gargraves track with Ross & Curtis switches. All switches are hand thrown by Caboose Industries. I used chicken grit for ballast & there is over 2700' of 16/2 wire. Took 8 years to get to this stage. Sometimes I just sit there and stare around not believing I built this.

Again, Thanks everyone for the nice comments.

Marty, that Challenger looks and runs great. Much fun to watch.

Here are a couple more pictures.
