I have an 8' x 12" display layout that has a Christmas theme with Deat 56 buildings on the main level and a 6" by 8" second level in the center of the main layout.  I have a total of three standard gauge loops, two in O, and a MTH repro of the Leland Detroit monorail.  I am debating whether to activate the numerous trackside accessories that I have using insulated rail sections that I have already laid or by installing small momentary push buttons around the layout to activate them manually.  Being that none of the loops is very large, I am concerned that the frequent activation of the accessories will become a distraction (some of them have loud ringing bells) or cause excessive wear on the accessories and was considering the push buttons as an interactive method of involving visitors in the action.  I know this is a subjective question, but I am interested in anyone's experience.

Thanks,

Tim

PS  I will be sure to post some pictures when I complete the annual cleaning of the layout.

Like everything in life, it depends.  Mostly upon who your taget audience is.  I have a small layout with many pushbuttons on it.  Children of all ages love it.  But what is quickly annoying to adults kids love.  I am thinking of ringing bells, whistles, and the gateman going in and out of his house.  Kids can't get enough of the gateman.  I haven't had any problem with wear on anything.  All of the accessories used are really pretty simple: a solenoid or a small motor of some sort.  I am amazed they still function.  I originally had some concern that the solenoids would overheat and had considered putting in a timer so that the pushbuttons could not immediately re-activate the accessories but there have not been any issues.  I have seen this issue with accessories which were activated by a control rail and a car just sat on the track keeping the solenoid activated for an extended period of time.  Ask me how I know.  As Rob has suggested you could put a "secret" SPDT switch which would toggle the accessory activation to ether the pushbutton orthe control rail.
