I had a retired RR official hand me a stack of books; One set is 1974 to 2014 Railway Fuel and Operating Officers Association (RFOFA) that morphed into International Association of Railway Officers.  The second set is 2001 to 2014 of Locomotive Maintenance Officers Association.  These are books that contain the speeches  invited RR personal gave at the respective annual meetings.

I began perusing the books and actually found them interesting on various subjects.  It is dry but informative reads (but not as dry dry and bone boring as IEEE journals ).  Most interesting were those involved electrical (for instance how to find a shorted turn in an AC traction motor that won't register on ohm meter).  Must be because I am a retired E.E. maybe?

One article in 1981 of the RFOFA detailed the thought process that went into the design of the never built American Coal Enterprises steam locomotive.  An artist concept drawing was shown, but as they say never left the drafting table.

I Googled and found a Wiki link detailing this stillborn concept.

If you can locate a 1981 copy of the RFOFA book, it is an fascinating interesting read.

Hope I haven't put you to sleep by now.

Allofwhich makes Scott Mann's (Sunset 3rd Rail) announcement of executing a model of the ACE3000 the more interesting/exciting.

But, I dunno.....with so much D.C. effort to put a silver dagger through the heart of the coal industry, it's like buying into the 'dark side' (pun intended) of model railroading.

Hmmmm.....wonder what Darth Vader would look like ditching his cape for some blue/white striped overalls/cap?
