I'd like to catch an AEM-7 locomotive. No, I can't run that fast.....LOL. There are two for sale on Evilbay. One Atlas and one MTH. Can anyone comment on the pros and cons of each ?

I have the Atlas one. It has TMCC. I like it and it runs well. It has some very nice detail. I'm sure that the MTH version does too since it is mostly a box.
This is probably not much help,but the Atlas model was done first and remains the engine that others are compared to.

The MTH is command, depending on which Atlas, it'll either be conventional or have TMCC.
Henning's Trains has one on eBay right now with an hour and 45 minutes left. It is the one with LocoMatic, that is a remote control box, but it will also run plain conventional. I just sold one of these with LocoMatic to a guy coming to the Allentown show, delivering it Saturday.
Both the Atlas and MTH are fairly feature rich, they have strobes, nice detailing, etc. As Norm says, they're basically a box with wheels and pantographs. A nice touch with the Atlas is that there are two sets of pantographs with it in different styles.
Oops, the Henning's one just bumped up to $200, I sold mine too cheap!

Is it possible to install tmcc in the locomatic version?
It's certainly possible, I got the one I had with that intention, but then I got the MTH version, so I decided to sell this one. I also have too many projects on my plate!
I have both. The main difference between the two is the motor. The MTH has two can motors and the Atlas has a single horizontal motor similar to the Atlas HO engines. There is not a lot of room under the shell for any type of conversions. The Atlas locomatic just did not impress me one bit.
The Atlas paint, in my opinion, is much closer to the Amtrak AEM7.
Also note the Atla sO colors are more to the prototype than the MTH ones. the MTH uses a darker blue than what was used on the prototype.
I love my conventional Atlas AEM-7, very nice paint and details, very realistic, runs great, big motor with coasting fly wheel, runs very smoothly around the layout, and it's a stump puller.
I bought it new 8 years ago with three new 21" Atlas Amtrak Horizon passenger cars from Nicholas Smith at York for $350, picked up a few more cars since at York, makes a fine looking, and running train.
Atlas.....that's all....
i HAVE THE MTH proto-1 version and a member of my club has the Atlas , both nice, I prefer the MTH and the MTH passenger station sounds are just great. I have the MTH proto-3 version on order due to Arrive in April so my older version wil be for sale shortly-any interest??

We have the Atlas version with locomatic. It looks nice but we almost NEVER run it. It's not command and control. We try to run it "conventionally" via DCS remote and the horn just constantly blows. We can't figure out why.
I wish I had purchased the MTH version. We would be looking for a NJT road name, but those are hard to find.

They are both great. The Atlas pans are sprung perfectly if you are thinking of Catenary.
FYI, the Amtrak protocol was one aem7 for every 9 cars. If you added a heavyweight car or a heritage car in the consist, that heavyweight/heritage car was counted as two cars alone!

$175 shipped. has BCR installed. There is no box as I have special container for transport to the club. Also in and out of the boxes would have been a bit too much on the catenary. Will keep you in mind when the new model comes in
