This is a 5 v board where the speaker has deteriorated. Removing the speaker and the train runs fine. Is it worth trying to just install a new speaker or should I get a diesel upgrade kit too?? Its 16 ohm, 5 watt. Thanks

New speaker if it still runs fine without it. That's the low cost solution.
I run my 5V boards as long as they'll run! Measure the speaker diameter, you should be able to find a match.
Thanks. Is this Star Speaker 5 watt or .5 watt?? I can find lots of 16 ohm spkrs with .5 watt. Not sure if I can use that.
The speaker is 5 watt and 16 ohm. They are available on Amazon for $6.49. Just put in 2" 16 ohm speaker and scroll down a bit on the page. They are called Factory Closeout. They even have two leads soldered on them.
Nothing in that listing says 5W, how did you come up with that value?
Ok, I ordered from VT hokie on ebay, a 16 ohm 2” speaker, supposed to be for MTH PS2 5 v system. About $17 shipped. It even includes the wires and proper connector. Will let you know how this turns out.
Received my new speaker Fri and installed it today. It's a 16 Ohm .2 Watt Star speaker, 2". I installed it and it works great. See video, short but makes the point. The best thing was no soldering required because it had the leads already soldered on with the correct connector. The wires were red(pos) and black instead of yellow and white. I was concerned since it was only .2 watts instead of 5 but it works ok. Unfortunately all I have now is my short test track so I can't really get a full DCS type test and play all the sounds.
It should work fine, the .2W 8 ohm version of the Star speaker was used in virtually all the PS/1 engines.
.2 watt is the minimum value. The speakers are a full 5 watt maximum value.
