My tiu and train store tiu could not recognize my aiu. Also used new cord but no luck. What is the next step?

I think you'll need another AIU to verify it's not a problem with your TIU. Since the AIU did not work at the train store either, I'm guessing the AIU is dead. I can't think of anything to do right off the top of my head, but if it is out of warranty, then I would open it up and see if anything looks broken. I've never opened an AIU...

Make sure the phone cord has both the plugs facing the same direction. Lay the cord flat and the tangs should both be pointing in the same direction. You did not say if your AIU used to work OK. There was a batch of bad phone cords back about 6-10 yrs ago where the ends where opposite of each other.
Other than that see if the TIU will recognize another AIU at the hobby shop. If not it's a TIU issue. If it does recognize a different AIU, then your AIU is bad. However, I suspect it's a bad phone cord.
If you happened at any time to have the AIU's cable plugged into the TIU's "AIU Input" port and the AIU's "AIU Input" port instead of its "TIU Input" port while the TIU was powered up, there's a good chance that you damaged the AIU.
Thank you for your comments. I just got a working aiu from a friend and will try it. I will keep you posted. I don't think I plug the cords in wrong in that I had read Barries book carefully before trying. I had heard about the bad cords so when at the store, I got one that mth had sent to replace the bad cords. As far as previous use of the aiu, this was the first time, I had tried it. I use TMCC for control of my switchs on my larger layout and was just trying MTH for switch control on a smaller layout. I use Ross switches with z 2010 switch motors. I am trying to compair the two systems for their management of switches. On the larger layout sometimes, the tmcc is not always dependable. I do think I will have a learning curve with the aui. I certainly had one with the TMCC.
