Alaska Railroad & 7.2 earthquake

I can't imagine what that was like. We had a little 2. something in 2011 here in NJ. Epicenter in VA. Our bedrock transfers the energy differently. Feeling the slight movement was very disconcerting.

        Kicked my house here in Wasilla pretty hard. Not to make light of the real damage the quake did but it did shake my own little railroad pretty good.

      We were actually very lucky given  how hard this quake shook. Still feeling many after shocks. Hope this ends soon.

I heard a geologist state that the aftershocks can go on for as long as two weeks with a quake of this force.

My house only felt like it rolled one or twice, like a canoe on a pond. It must frightening to be shaken.

That's a lot of force to shake the layout like that.

       I was pretty scared. I had to get my wife and elderly mother in law out of the house. We sat in our car for several hours. 

       I had to reposition my wood stove to warm the house as the power was out for several hours.

       Lots and lots of things hit the floor. Was a real mess.

        Luckily not much train damage.  My z4000 fell about three feet but still works, a few broken hand rails, a few trucks broken off but nothing serious.

         We got very very lucky. Just had another jolt a couple of minutes ago. Haven't slept at all.

There is something particularly unnerving about the earth moving. I can understand why you haven't slept. Hang in there.

Unnerving, to say the least. I've felt earthquakes many times when we lived in California, but nothing strong enough to knock anything off the wall, much less topple model trains. The aftershocks make you wonder if another big one is going to hit and that will make for some sleepless nights. Take care and keep safe.

I wondered about this yesterday, and forgot to ask . How about the White Pass & Yukon? Did it get damage...would not have wanted to be on the old bypaased trestle.  Is it still standing?  Hope this missed that, although would guess this is some distance?  Hope nobody got hurt....

WPY - is a long way from the epicenter - doubt they felt the quake.

Hang in there all, having my ticket punched for both the North Ridge and Loma Prieta Quakes here in CA it is no joke. I had felt a couple of little quakes before the Loma Prieta one, but I'll tell you, that one shook me to the core.  Yes there is something very unnerving when the ground beneath you, the one thing that you know is never supposed to move, moves and there is no where to run to safety, why? Because the ground beneath you is moving. It is nothing like any of the rides at some of the theme parks, again why? Because you know it is only a ride and it will end, in real life both assumptions are false, it's not a ride and you don't know when it will end. Stay safe!

3 days after the Alaska quake - the Alaska Railroad is resuming train traffic.  The Operations Center is still out of commission.  Repair Crews have been working around the clock to get trains moving again.  

Most of the roads have been repaired & in the process of being paved.

Not sure if asphalt plants have ever operated in Alaska in the month of December.  So far we have very little to no snow around the state.
