Hello I got some new flyer items and wanted to see what is in the Flyer 1185 set. I cant seem to find any reference of that set. But that is the number on the box, I also have a set#102 I am trying to figure out. I have sets and boxes but no idea how they belong. The third box has no marking and the sticker is missing. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

According to the late Robert Tuft's Almost Complete Guide to American Flyer S Gauge Sets, the 102 was a 1955 uncataloged set containing a 303 Atlantic and these freight cars: 931, 923, 925, 940, 924 & 938. The 1185 had a 293 Pacific with 805, 802, 925 & 806. Both sets came with enough track to make a figure 8 with the included 747 cardboard trestle set and #1 1/2 transformer.

Thanks Flyer rich. It is coming together. it looks like I will have everything to complete the uncataloged set with boxes and I even have the cardboard trestles and box. The engine only has a wrap and there would be a box of straigt track and a box of curved track I guess. plus the crossing would be boxed I assume. Those Im missing but should be able to find. But I do have both the sets I mentioned. Would the uncataloged set be more desirable? Also I know its subjective but what would be the value of the sets if I can get them completed. If anyone had a reference picture that would be great. Thanks for all the help.

There was no crossing. The trestle set took care of that by elevating one track over the other. Regarding the increased desireability of an uncatalogued set, I would say it depends. Your sets contain very common items so I don't think so. If they contained more rare and exotic locos and cars then it is possible with all original boxes etc. Reference pix of the sets would most likely be found in local ads from the time in newspapers. I've seen these in the S Gaugian magazine from time to time but I'm not aware of any definitive source. They are obviously not in the catalogs.

I'd also note that many of the uncataloged sets like the 1185 did not include boxes for the individual cars. The locomotive usually had a wrap, but the cars were typically separated by cardboard inserts. Several of my uncataloged sets are packed this way.

For Redman440, please post the carton manufacturer's number from the set boxes if you can find them. I don't think they are listed in the Tufts guide, and it's always nice to keep the lists up-to-date. I'd guess that the 1185 box would start with a "B2N" number and is either a GAIR or Interstate box.

EDIT: Rich beat me to the punch on the packaging comments thanks to my slow typing skills!

Hello, I have been pulling all the stuff together. I have three set boxes which if you pull the cars for the 2 known sets it leaves a mix. But that box is missing the tag for the 3 rd set so no big deal. But all the cars for the 1185 set have boxes. Which matches I also have the 747 trestle Box. I have a 1.5 and 2 amp transformer a box for 12 curve but no straight track box. So I guess that the track may not have been boxed but I think all the cars were boxed and I have the engine wrap. The set was shipped to Richie Premium Company in Tamaqua Pa and the box as a B-IN882 on it. Also would the set come with 12 curves or 16 to make the figure 8?
