I picked this up from a co worker and am having trouble identifying it, I think its a 402 but I cannot find any pictures of it with the four wheel tender. I know the set had only one owner and has almost no wear , so I am assuming the tender was not swapped out at some point. the drivers need to be replaced but other than that its a nice piece.  there seems to be a lot of variations of this loco out there.  RickIMG_0267

Can you post some clearer/closer pictures?  Be sure to include a photo of what type of coupler is on the tender, and a nice profile shot of the engine itself.  I am not a pre-war flyer authority in any way, but I do own a similar engine.  The single picutre makes it really hard to tell what you've got.

Thanks for the info, been mostly into Lionel pre war and the cab number usually tells the tale. AF locos don't seem to have numbers and or two different ones , best i could come up with was a 402 comparing it to photos on line. not sure weather it's a bell ringer yet as the gears have crumbled , new wheels ordered and on there way. thanks again  Rick

Yes Rick, Flyer is a pain to identify! But that's what forums are for.... they all have numbers, just not on the loco.  In fact they have three numbers Combo, Loco and Tender.  Very confusing.  Look in the cab...if you see a bell...then its a bell ringer... and needs a special wheel to operate it.

Ok  got the new wheels from Henning's in the mail Saturday and installed them. It's quite the mouse trap in this thing, it seems to have a manual forward reverse lever (up and down in the cab) and a reverse lockout on the bottom. the loco runs now but I am confused as to what the cam on the center gear and the arm it is connected to does.  it runs better on clip leads on the bench than on the track ,i think the center rail pickup might have a loose wire.
