I have six of these on my layout.  The potmetal was bad on all of them.  I did not want to use the solenoids (or manual control) anyway because they take up so much room.  All of mine required new wiring and other repairs.  They are switched with servo motors and have been working reliably for several years.  Never any derailments - unlike lionel switches.  I also have six or seven of the AF O switches.  I had to add some little pieces of wood to keep the operating car shoes from fouling the switch. They work really well also.
