I'm sure I'm not the first to ask this, but I searched the s scale forum and didn't really find anything.

I really enjoy my new 990 legacy system for my u33c,legacy engines sd70 and both of my es44.

The thing is, I have 2 conrail switchers. 1 is a SW-9 SHS and the other is a AM Baldwin S-12. Also have a AM sd60 norfolk southern locomotive that I've had for many years. All DC.

Is there anyway or any shop that could convert these DC engines to run on my legacy system?

                                      Thanks, Adam.

Adam: If your U33C, SD70 & ES44s are all Lionel, they still operate off of "AC" track power-the electronics rectifies that to DC for the can motors to operate.

My SHS SW9 operates on "AC" as well, but SHS may have sold "DC" only models as well. Check your engine box to see what it is. The AM Baldwins and SD60 also need to be checked for electrical configuration. Most anything of "recent' manufacture is powered by DC can motors (in "S" anyway...).

Adam, you're going to have to convert them with electronics from the Electric Railroad Company.  They are the only one I know that is licensed to sell TMCC conversion electronics.

You'll have to install them yourself or find someone who can do the job.  Goldinhands is one such installer.

Carl Tuveson has some brief tutorials on installation for various locomotives on his website.  There's a link on the left of his home page for TMCC in S.  Click and scroll down towards the bottom of of the TMCC page for the links.

I purchase all of my  AM engines DC only because they are slightly cheaper and I have them converted to TMCC/Railsounds at Goldinhands. My SHS engines are AC because I purchased them at train shows. The SW-1 and SW-9 engines have little space so you need to contact Ed at Goldinhands about what is currently available that will fit. The easiest way to get all available features in small engines is buy a powered unit and a dummy, then all the electronics can be put in the dummy with a wired tether.

Tom, that's my plan. I got a little info from Ed over there at goldinhands. I'm not sure on the turn around time, but I'm really looking forward to getting these engines setup to run my legacy system.

He did inform me a little on what you were saying about the switchers not having much room to work with. Installing sound options may not be an option unless its setup like what you mentioned above.

There is another option for sound in these small switchers although it's more of "for" these switchers.

I have lots of the SHS switchers and all are soundless. What I did was buy one of the new American Flyer sound boxcars from Charles Ro:

Union Pacific

or New Haven

for diesel sounds. I bought the UP car and it sounds great.

Now, no matter what SHS switcher I run I put the UP car 1st in the line of cars and I have great diesel sounds.

I hope you have fun pretending that whatever railroads your switchers are from, that they took that switcher and put a GE FDL16 prime mover (what's in GE dash-9's). All kidding aside, these railsounds boxcars really sounds nice and make a nice addition to any conventional/TMCC non-sound engine.
