I have a GREAT NORTHERN LEGACY E6 ATLANTIC #1707 6-84947 that is too quiet. I have the sound turned all the way up on the pot switch in the tender and on my Legacy CAB2, also all the way up with AUX1+vol up. Even with that if i'm running another engine I can only hear this one when it passes by me. I'm talking about the engine background sounds in particular. If I blow the whistle or ring the bell or use the crew / tower announcements I can hear those just fine. I'm think of adding a small amp to my tender to turn the sounds up a bit. I've searched around and the best that I'm able to find is WINGONEER TDA7293 Mono Single Channel Digital Audio Power Amplifier Board AC 12-32V 100W on Amazon. I'm not an electrical expert by any means but am good at following directions and using a soldering iron. Looking for advise or assistance in installing this or a more appropriate amp in my tender. Thank you.

I'm waiting for one of our manufacturers to add a blue tooth broadcast to their engine sounds. A nice set of cheap computer speakers or a full blown sound system with a big sub woofer hooked to a receiver under the front of the layout would add a new dimension to our trains.  I have a Kato Sound Blox (sp.) that I use with my N scale and it makes the whole experience of running trains so much richer.                   Bigger Speakers = Bigger Sound. What say ye Lionel and MTH?

While you wait, on a rainy afternoon, try hooking up a wireless FM adapter back in the early days of MP3 players to listen over your car's FM radio.  These adapters are just a couple bucks.  See this thread.

There's only so much sound pressure level that you can get from a 2" speaker.  OTOH broadcasting to a home theater amplifier or Bluetooth speaker produces room shaking sound that's hard to describe in words!

Stan, it sounds like he just has to adjust the background sound volume in this case.

That is my issue exactly. I can't get the background sounds to turn up any louder. I tried volume up (key pad 1) and AUX+1. The other sounds are normal volume, however the background sounds act as if they are turned down a notch or two. I have also reset the engine to try and correct this as well.

It could just be the soundset Lionel chose for this locomotive.

Some legacy models have "less aggressive" chuffs than others and the chuffs can be harder to hear at speed over track and/or rolling stock noise.

My heavy Mike comes to mind.

Good luck in your pursuit of a solution. I'm interested to see what works.
