I scored this off eBay; some of you may have seen it when it was listed...

Now I don't know hardly anything about early, non-Flyer S scale: come to think of it, I really don't know that much about Flyer stuff either.

Anyway, I'm thinking this may have been a kit, given the quality of the scored sides and ends. Or it could have been a scratch-build using Northeastern wood(?) We'll never know for sure. There is no underbody detail, the truck "bolsters" are merely pieces of basswood, and roof "hatches" are simply wood squares, held in place with what I believe are HO scale track spikes.

I replaced the missing roof braces and used "Red Oak" (which tends to be brown-ish) stain to kind of blend in the old with the new:

I may go ahead and stain those hatches as well...

It does have a certain "old school" charm, and I only had to pay 5 bucks for it, so what the heck...

Looks like it might be built from an old Kinsman kit.

Kinsman is a definite possibility, Rusty, but I am kind of leaning towards an early '50s Nimco reefer kit because of the roof and Strummer's description. YMMV. Nimco (Nixon Model Co.) rolling stock kits came with little under frame detail. In either case, these came with decals for lettering for either brand or R.R. names.

Nice find!

For detail parts you might try Des Plaines Hobby or check out the NASG website where you will find other suppliers listed. Surprised the kit didn't come with at least a rudimentary selection of under frame parts like an air tank and brake valve. Most of the period HO kits had at least this much. Could be the original builder left them off to get the kit built quicker. Anyway I like it.

I didn't think this would garner as much interest as it has; thanks to you all for chiming in!

Here's a few more pix; I went ahead and stained the roof hatches:

...and here it is along side a Flyer reefer:

You can see it is a bit taller (not by much) than the Gilbert car: dunno if that's incorrect or not. Gee, looking at this photo it appears that the right-hand truck is a little more "inboard" from the car end; will have to check that out!

I did look at the NASG website for possible detail parts: San Juan Models has the old Grandt Line stuff, which is awesome, but I'd really prefer finding some metal pieces.

Have a good weekend...
