I have a pair of these PRR PS-1 boxcars with sound, it's nice to sprinkle a couple of these in a long consist for more realistic sound. Obviously, one of the issues is "fine tuning" the sound volume and mode, especially if you have more than one. The operation of these cars are set using manual switches and the volume pot on the bottom, which makes it difficult to adjust while you're running!
Here's my solution.
I started with this, the basic sound car.
Here's what I added to the car, The wiring harness allows me to use all the wiring in the car unmodified, I just turn the two switches off to allow the relay board to control the switch state of the SOUND/NO-SOUND and MIN/MAX switches. One issue I previously encountered is the large cap on the sound board causes a significant brief inrush current that exceeds the rating of my relays. So, I addressed that by adding an inrush limiter to the power switching that limits the maximum inrush current to about half an amp.
The obvious component that you need for this job is my 4-Channel Relay Remote that is described in this thread: The Universal Wireless Remote Control Topic. Other than a little heatshrink tubing and perhaps Velcro to stick the receiver down, that's all you need.
The two remaining controls on the 4-channel keyfob are used for volume control. I have three volume steps, full, medium, and low. That is accomplished by adding a resistor (or two) in series with the speaker to cut down the drive.
Here's the car before dressing up the wiring, all wired and tested.
The finished product, looks a lot like what I started with.
Here's what's "under the hood" so to speak. This is a schematic of the wiring to accomplish the goal. Obviously featured is my 4-channel RF remote control board.
