Looks like the controller for the power pack of the Lionel #8803 “workin on the railroad” set. I’ve seen this controller in the Santa Fe set. I believe these sets were dc only but I believe these engines may have been reissued as ac/dc compatible. That being said I may just have it confused with the Lionel #8300, which is a similar looking engine which is able to run on AC power.

I agree with Liam.  I had that exact set as a kid.  There was a very similar one with I think an additional car and maybe another structure included as well.

Those engines (and therefore this throttle) are DC only.  They will not work on conventional O Gauge transformers most of us use.

As to whether the engines were ever re-issued in a version that works on both AC and DC, that I have no idea. 

But the item shown is definitely a DC controller (and needs the wall-wart power brick to feed it, shown in Liam's picture).
