Lionel 2018 Volume 2 Special Runs?

You'll remember is the last Lionel catalog, we did a couple of special runs. The Nickel Plate Road #757's were sold out before they got here, and the Santa Fe F3 #27L-27C, 6-85364, are just now arriving and I am sure will sell out. BTW, if you'd like one, hit the 6-85364 link above.  

So - what Special Runs should we ask Lionel for in this Catalog?

Here's my list, below, and I need your preorders to determine which of these we should make - so what do you think?

September 8th Update - I added the other RS11's suggested - pretty terrific list!

I am thinking we do a special run of the Visionline Challenger in Western Maryland using a different road number than Charlie Nassau, and one in Delaware and Hudson livery, too. What do you think?

With an MSRP of $1999.99, we would need to sell them for $1799.96.

In the ALCo PA AA Sets category, again with all the features described in the 2018 Volume 2 catalog, I am proposing we do one set in Erie Passenger Paint and another set in the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio livery. 

These would retail for $999.99 with both A's being powered, and we would need to sell them for $899.96. 

If either of these are of interest to you, please preorder one using the links below. No deposit is required - I just need to see if there's enough interest to make either one of these. Of course, I am planning to keep one of each.

ALCo RS-11's are one of my favorite diesels, and I have lots of suggestions here. 

Lionel cataloged an RS-11 in LV repainted in Conrail, Item #1933031, so I think we should do a Lehigh Valley to match it. Lionel did one before, but with the small lettering - this one would have the big lettering and the black and white end stripes. 

Lionel also did a NKP before, but if there's interest, we could do it again, but with a different road number. 

Lionel also did a Delaware & Hudson before in the blue and gray. These would be in the blue with yellow nose, #5001 and blue with the script lettering, #5002. 

I am asked all the time for Penn Central, so here's an RS-11 in PC - want this one?

At the Illinois Transportation Museum there's an RS-11 in Toledo, Peoria and Western. The TP&W ran from Peoria east across Indiana so these TP&W diesels ran around here. 

If you're interested in any of these, please preorder so I can get up the courage to have them made. No deposit required. (Too bad the Monon didn't have any ALCO RS-11's)

I would think that the big question would be; will Lionel have the correct tender for both of these models? Neither of those models should have the UP pedestal/centipede tender. 

For those who fastidiously follow prototypicality, I would say this is a true concern. Fortunately for me HW, I am as far from a rivet counter as you can get... I will have no problem having a D&H Challenger, with or without the prototypical tender, pulling a few Gunderson Maxi IV’s. Just my outlook on trains!!!

Some Western Pacific F3’s.  Next month the Atlas F3’s will be officially 3 years past their originally scheduled delivery date.  And, considering the news from last month who knows when Atlas will be able to deliver.  I have a fully populated 12-car WP  Zephyr set from Atlas that is collecting a lot of dust.

While some folks may not think a PRR F3 should warrant a special run because so many have been made, a prototypical correct PRR F3 Phase 2 or 3 would be special.  I'm talking about an F3 with PRR's small streamlined number boards, not the incorrect large number boards that has been on all recent O gauge versions of a PRR F3.

3rd Rail is doing correct F3 Phase 4 A and B units, but the PRR did not buy any freight geared F3 Phase 4 B-units.  All F3 Phase 4 B-units were geared for helper service.  PRR F3 Phase 4 AA sets used in freight service were teamed with a Phase 2 or 3 B-unit.  These were called grill-screen-grill sets.  

So, outside of some high end (expensive) brass sets, no one has done a correct F3 ABA set I can haul freight with.  I would hope there would be a big enough market for a correct PRR F3 Phase 2 Late/Phase 3 to justify Lionel modifying the current F3A mold with the small streamlined number boards (its F3B mold is good as is). 

Make both A units powered with a super bass B unit and this would be a special run engine I would buy.

PS Maybe just make a PRR F3B Phase 2/3 with super base then I'd buy it and two 3rd Rails F3 A Phase 4 engines for a correct grill-screen-grill set.

Now, what I would really go for is a GP9 in PC.  I would like to see the SD40 and GP35 in PC, also.

This engine peaked my interest, so I did a little research.  According to Lionel.com, there were two of these engines catalogued in 2012.  Number 6-38452 with road number 7605 and 6-38453 with road number 7608.  

Steve, first of all, thanks for thinking outside the box by coming up with these “special run” ideas.  It gives some of us the opportunity to purchase a locomotive in a favorite road name and livery that may otherwise never be produced.  I’m a big D&H and Lehigh Valley fan, so I’m admittedly intrigued by the RS11’s.

I would strongly consider the D&H RS11 #5002 in the lighter blue paint with script D&H lettering...that truly was a one-of-kind paint scheme!  I don’t really like the look of the D&H “yellow nose” version; however, I would sign up for this one if ever offered...

As for the Lehigh Valley one, I just purchased the MTH Premier GP9 in that same late L.V. “bright” Cornell Red with large lettering scheme, and I also own the Lionel Legacy ALCo C-420 in that scheme...so I’m not sure if I want to add a third similiarly-decorated loco to my roster.  I would say “maybe” as of right now.  

I’d be more interested if it was offered in the Pennsy-influenced Tuscan Red with medium-sized lettering paint scheme shown below.  Side note: There haven’t been very many (if any) L.V. engines offered by Lionel, MTH or AtlasO in Tuscan Red, yet that color certainly represented a period in the L.V.’s history.  Most, if not all, of what’s been produced to date have been done in either the early Cornell Red, or the later bright Red.
