Any one put chains on their 6 wheel heavyweight trucks?

No I used to, but I just don't run when it snows these days.  The chains really make the wheels go clunkety clunk.

Those are actually safety chains.  In real life they were meant to keep the truck under the car in case of a derailment since there's really nothing but gravity physically attaching a car to the truck otherwise.

They add a little "extra".

I checked my other heavyweights and none have these, so I suspect the previous owner did the "upgrade".

These are the early Lionel Santa Fe and New York Central cars, that is how Lionel manufactured them.

What is the item number of the 2 car set? They may be from the re-run some years later.

My Santa Fe cars had them but I had to remove them as they kept causing derailments. They limit the motion too much through curves and turnouts....so off they went.

It's a nice looking feature, probably cost a bit of labor to do. Maybe they needed to make them a few links longer to prevent derailments ( theres always a sweet spot btwn too short, too long), but that too requires some time and adjustments.
