I have some.  they look great and are an added addition fun to showing off the layout. BUT, always have a means to turn them off; less they drive you crazy.  Mine are activated by the "dead rail" method--meaning when a train is on the "dead rail" it will activate the signals by completing the circuit.  I also have a toggle switch that "kills" the circuit as well, because these signals are near a passenger platform and when a passenger train stops to pickup/drop off passengers, the signal sound becomes annoying quickly.

I have 4 road crossings that all use Lionel's 154 Crossing Light & 252 Crossing Gate.  A homemade electronic circuit is used to alternately flash the crossing lights.  One of the crossings uses a Lionel 140 Banjo Crossing Signal.  All are activated from relays and isolated outside rails.

The gates and lights start 20 seconds into the video.

imageimageSo I went for the cheaper option and used crossing signals that they have every year at Christmas to use with the ceramic villages. I think I paid around $5 and they just run off an adaptor under the layout.

They fit in very well scale wise but they do flash all the time. I don't mind the continuing flash and the kids like them. They are a good, low cost, no hassle option.
