I WAS GIVEN THIS TODAY , IT HAS A BRASS BODY AND A CAST WHITE METAL FRAME . IT SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN MADE FROM AN EARLY KIT LIKE WERE POPULAR IN THE EARLY 50'S.

IT IS MISSING THE LEAD TRUCK AND HAS SOME LOST DETAILS. IT APPEARS TO HAVE A 4 WHEEL LEAD TRUCK.  THE TENDER TRUCKS SEEM TO BE LIONEL .DSCF2904DSCF2905DSCF2906DSCF2907DSCF2908DSCF2909DSCF2910DSCF2911DSCF2912DSCF2913DSCF2914DSCF2915DSCF2916DSCF2917DSCF2918DSCF2919DSCF2920DSCF2921DSCF2922DSCF2923DSCF2924DSCF2925DSCF2926

I am sure I will be challenged by somebody MUCH more knowledgeable in old  O scale, but that looks like the 4-6-0 kit sold by that guy in Tennessee (I think somebody has bought the company from him).  I think that kit goes way back, to Varney, when Varney was in O scale.  Interesting that it has O scale flanges on the drivers and three rail collectors.  Would it stay on any commercial three rail track system, even with flat top rails?

Varney. I have "the same engine" in the 4-4-0 version. Very 3-rail-able in my case - deep flanges. One day I'll...after the next dozen projects.

Above: "Would it stay on any commercial three rail track system, even with flat top rails?"

Absolutely - the 3/2 rail manufacturers use the same running rail profile (code/height may vary) regardless of the presence of a third one (this has been discussed many times). Based on its age and 3-rail track of the time, it may have run on plain Lionel tubular.

The center flanged driver would probably limit you to big curves - even 072 could be too small. Switches - that may be another matter with the big hi-rail flange ways.

Neat loco; worth resto-bashing. Varney O-parts are found on eBay, from time to time. A modern can motor could be installed, if need be.
