Ok so I got this idea while watching the race at Martinsville and I saw the NS line running behind the backstretch. I have always loved trains and I have always loved nascar. I am thinking about modeling a race track on my layout. Obviously I would try to model a local short track since my space will be limited. Has anyone ever done something like this? Any thoughts?

A full track would be a real "Space Hog". I built the Mirror Bridge in the photo below. I had seen it on another web-site and I liked the way it turned out.

That looks great
My two sons were at the race today. I have attended MANY races there during my NASCAR licensing days. It's my favorite track.
So back a few years ago a company came out with 1/144 scale NASCAR die cast cars and truck transporters. My sons and I collected them all and set out to build a 'SCALE' Martinsville. Just the track and infield mind you. The track alone still ended up filling a 4 x 8 foot space!!! And this in 1/144!! The shortest circle track I know of is a 3/8 mile track.....still huge in 1/48. But if you shrink it....maybe a 24 x36 inch oval could be convincing enough....still a lot of real estate.
I was bored.....and curious.....so I figured out how big Martinsville would be in 1/48 scale. Remember this is the smallest track on the NASCAR circuit. Space required for a 1/48 scale Martinsville WITHOUT and grandstands??? 9' 4" x 25'!! So selective compression will be a must for any race track in scale.
Wow that really puts everything in perspective. The spot on the layout I have is only 5.5' x 4'.

I think you could do a decent track in that space. Like a 3' x 4' oval......it'd be cool!!
We had a HO scale slot car track back in the 1980's.....it was 12' x 8' L shape and full scenery, buildings, parking and hills.......so a track in scale is neat!
