I checked the Shipping schedule on Lionel's website just now and there is a gap: what is listed jumps from 11343 to 12022.

The three locos I am interested in fall into this range: 11419 (So. Pacific GS-2 - ordered), 11426 (Rio Grand shifter-ordered) and the N&W J (loco only, 11414, sitting on the fence).

I recall reading on some thread about the teaser or catalog, but could not find it again, that at least one in the new catalog was shipping in January.  Anyone heard anything of the schedule.

Wow Nicole - you know everything!  Thank you!

This is news is fantastic.  I will have my second shifter for Christmas, and can explain my GS-2 to my wife as a Birthday gift to myself!  Perfect.

Buy the way, what would you think of my buying the N&W J and repainting it/relettering it Union Pacific?  Would it look good in the gray and black of the Challenger, etc.?

Just a quick note, but history tells us that dates tend to shift from the initial prediction at catalog reveal.

(Quite often, the first shift will be posted right after pre-orders are due in to dealers.  I suspect that's actually a marketing ploy since it happens so often.  Probably (correctly) figuring that people are more likely to put in a order if the item is not too far out there time-wise.)

Not trying to rain on the parade, but if the items referenced are actually new units not previously cataloged, I'd hazard a guess that you'll see at least a 2-3 month slip on those.

There are of course the exceptions.  Last catalog, the EM-1s were in the stores I think before the catalogs even were!

Personally, I'd be very reluctant to repaint such a beautiful locomotive. But I know how good an artist you are with your repainting of various other locomotives.  Perhaps you could obtain a plastic kit, or a cheap H0 model to see how it would look before taking on the real thing?

Experience (I guess that's the same as history) with my past orders has shown me:

  • I've never had an pre-ordered item cancelled.  Either Lionel really pays attention to my orders, or I only order things that are popular.  (I imagine it's the latter).
  • Items scheduled within the first four months after the catalog is released tend to be pretty much on time.
  • New products slip a lot more in schedule than products that have been made before, maybe just not in the latest offered roadname.

I have decided to repaint the J in Union Pacific gray and black.  I think it will look stunning. I have nothing against N&W, but my layout is the southern Rockies and southwest US (where I grew up)
