I have recently acquired a set of Lionel NYC Sharknose engines. These are the early Legacy engines. The A unit (6-34524) uses grain of wheat bulbs to light the marker bulbs. After running the engine yesterday  for about 10 minutes I touched the nose section , and felt a lot of heat build up !!  I'm afraid that if I run this engine for a long time - The heat will melt / damage the nose portion of the shell.  Has anyone replaced these bulbs with leds and what did you use ?  Tried to do a search, couldn't find anything.  Thanks in Advance.

I do it all the time.  For those, I believe they're 18V bulbs from track power.  I use a 1K resistor and two 2835 surface mount LED's to light number boards of that shape.  Since they're supplied with AC, I just wire the two LED's in opposite polarity to avoid the need for a diode for protection.

At times I've resorted to a tiny PCB to mount a surface mount LED for easier handling.
