I've been out of the loop for a while and searching the forum is like a needle in a haystack.
Can I use a CAB-1 remote and original command base to run the Lion Chief Plus locomotives in a programmed locomotive command mode? Or, do I have to use the Lion Chief remote?

No you can not only use the remote comes with the engine.

In short, as has been discussed many, many times. LC engines MUST be run via the remote. LC+ can be run via remote or transformer. With the LC remote, you can run on anything that has 18 volts

Depends on the engine, but you gut the LC+ stuff and start over. So why buy an LC+, get the TMCC version for about $50 more. The full upgrade of LC+ is over $200. G
You do have to use the LionChief remote, but remember, a LionChief or LC+ loco will run on a TMCC, DCS, or DCC equipped layout (using it's own controller) without interference to those other digital systems, so converting it to TMCC just wouldn't make much sense. Since the LC controller comes with LC locos, that's all you really need to buy...
