I recently found a kit built Maine Central 50' boxcar at a great price in an antique store and picked it up knowing full well it had 2 rail trucks and couplers. I'm trying to figure out what the easiest route would be to get 3 rail trucks/couplers on it. Are the lionscale 70t trucks an off the shelf fit without the car riding too high? I would think so since the lionscale cars use the same tooling but I want to be sure before I purchase any. I known it's been discussed before but I've seen conflicting answers.

Lionel decided to design their own trucks for the cars. Not sure about now but the offered trucks to make them two rail. MTH before Mike retired they were making the Weaver trucks from the Weaver tooling. I got them from Patrick's Trains. You could also check the bay........Paul 2
Was this a Weaver kit and if so are the trucks plastic? If so I have wheel sets and couplers that fit Weaver plastic trucks if you are interested in a trade. The plastic trucks are exactly the same for both two rail and three rail. The only difference being the wheelsets and couplers. For a three rail coupler it is a piece that sits between the truck and body. My E-mail is in my profile if you are interested.
When I designed the new Lionscale trucks I did so with the intent of not having to modify the existing tooling we bought from Joe at Weaver. So, yes, the Lionscale die-cast trucks will fit the older Weaver freight cars. As for the caboose, I honestly don’t remember. There are 50T bettendorf and 70T roller bearing style side frames with separate sale 2-rail wheelsets and bolsters (to allow the car to sit at a proper 2-rail scale height).

I've used the LionScale trucks with my Weaver cars. They work great. Be aware though, the mounting hole is a tad different, and made of plastic. They break very easily.
